Solar Energy: Principles and Applications
PRICE GROUP WEBINAR
Webinar Title: Solar Energy: Principles and Applications
Webinar No: R04-201W
PDH Credit: 4
Presenter: Harlan Bengtson, PhD, P.E.
Time: From 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM ET
This online engineering PDH live webinar presents the properties of electromagnetic radiation and provides basic calculations for electromagnetic radiation. It discusses several solar position parameters along with means of calculating values for them. It also touches on the major methods by which solar radiation is converted into other useable forms of energy. It presents the extraterrestrial solar radiation and illustrates how to obtain values for the average monthly rate of solar radiation striking the surface of a typical solar collector, at a specified location in the United States for a given month. It presents calculations and data retrieval methods through numerous examples.
Solar energy is radiant light and heat that travels from the sun to the earth in the form of electromagnetic radiation and is harnessed using a range of ever-evolving technologies, such as solar heating, photovoltaics, solar thermal energy, solar architecture and artificial photosynthesis. It is an important source of renewable energy and its technologies are broadly characterized as either passive solar or active solar depending on the way they capture and distribute solar energy or convert it into solar power.
This 4 PDH online live webinar is intended primarily for chemical, environmental, mechanical and industrial engineers who are interested in learning more about solar energy.
This PE continuing education live webinar is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Understanding the different types of electromagnetic radiation and which of them are included in solar radiation
- Calculating wavelength if given frequency, and frequency if given wavelength, for specified electromagnetic radiation
- Learning about absorbance, reflectance, and transmittance as applied to a surface receiving electromagnetic radiation and to make calculations using those parameters
- Obtaining values for solar declination, solar hour angle, solar altitude angle, sunrise angle, and sunset angle, and applying them in radiation calculations
- Learning about the major methods by which solar radiation is converted into other useable forms of energy
- Obtaining an estimated value for monthly averaged extraterrestrial radiation on a horizontal surface for a specified month and latitude between 20 and 65 degrees
- Obtaining values for the average monthly rate of solar radiation striking the surface of a solar collector with one of several standard tilt angles at a specified location in the United States for a given month
