Seismic Design of Cast-in-Situ Concrete Diaphragms According to ACI 318-19 & ASCE 7-22

COURSE NO: S05-017
PDH CREDIT: 5
Seismic Design of Cast-in-Situ Concrete Diaphragms According to ACI 318-19 & ASCE 7-22
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course provides information on the role and design of diaphragms in the structural system of buildings and presents constructability issues for cast-in-place concrete diaphragms.

Building structures generally comprise a three-dimensional framework of structural elements that are configured to support gravity and lateral loads. Although the complete three-dimensional system acts integrally to resist loads, structural engineers commonly conceive of the seismic force-resisting system as being composed of vertical elements, horizontal elements, and the foundation.

Diaphragms transmit lateral forces from the floor system to the vertical elements of the structural system. They also tie the vertical elements together and thereby stabilize these elements and transmit forces among them. Diaphragms are thus an essential part of the structural system and require design attention by the structural engineer to ensure the structural system performs adequately under design loadings.

This 5 PDH online course is applicable to structural, forensic-structural, and civil engineers, as well as others interested in understanding the structural analysis, design, detailing, and constructability of cast-in-place concrete diaphragms.
Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Familiarizing with diaphragm components and its multiple roles to resist gravity and lateral forces in buildings
  • Familiarizing with the diaphragm behavior, design principles and its stiffness modeling
  • Gaining a general overview of diaphragm design forces and collector design forces
  • Learning how to analyze and design diaphragms with openings and how to analyze and design of ramps
  • Understanding the various diaphragm modeling and analysis approaches
  • Learning how to design partial-depth collectors
  • Understanding diaphragm shear distribution and how to design diaphragm slabs on the ground
  • Learning about the various issues related to detailing and constructability of diaphragms
