Earthquakes, Structural Defects, Structural Damages, and Possible Solutions
This online engineering PDH course presents a basic understanding of earthquakes and seismic waves along with their associated impact on structures and recommends structural solutions to minimize the impact of earthquakes on buildings.
This course starts off by presenting some statistics and background information about recent destructive earthquakes. It then shows the structure of the earth, explains plate tectonics and seismic waves, and discusses the effects of earthquakes on structures. In addition, this course examines the failure reasons for masonry building damage and evaluates lessons learned from previous earthquake damages.
This 2 PDH online course is applicable to structural and civil engineers as well as other technical professionals interested in learning about earthquake characteristics, the cause of damage that occurs in structures and how to address these issues effectively.
This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Familiarizing oneself with the most recent global occurrences of destructive earthquakes
- Understanding the composition of the earth, plate tectonics, seismic waves, faults, and the impacts of earthquakes
- Learning about the causes of failure in reinforced concrete (RC) buildings resulting from earthquakes
- Knowing about the factors leading to failure in masonry buildings during earthquakes
- Knowing the insights obtained from earthquake damage and failures observed in relation to this natural hazard
- Learning various recommendations for mitigating earthquake damage
