An Introduction to Diesel-Electric Generating Plants

This online engineering PDH course will introduce you to the equipment, facilities and operational requirements for diesel-electric generating plants to provide electric power at facilities where utility power is not available and to provide power to facilities in the event of utility power outages.
You will learn about criteria for unit and plant capacities, selection of units, spinning reserve requirements, fuel selection, storage and handling, engine exhaust systems, unit cooling systems, lubricating and starting systems, foundations, cranes and hoists, and synchronous generators. You will be introduced to requirements for engine controls and instruments, generator controls and protection, and operating control. This course will give you an introduction that will allow you to move forward to design of specific projects and plants.
This 3 PDH online course is intended for electrical and mechanical engineers and other design and construction professionals interested to learn the fundamentals of designing diesel-electric generating plants for facilities where utility power is not available or where a source of backup or emergency power is needed. This course will provide engineers and other design and construction professionals an introduction to the selection of diesel-electric generating units for prime and emergency/standby duty power systems, design of the associated plant buildings, and system operations.
This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Learning about the equipment and facilities needed for diesel-electric generating plants
- Learning how to determine needed plant capacity
- Learning about spinning reserve and its importance in a power generating system
- Learning about fuel selection for diesel-electric generators
