About Yun Zhou, Ph.D., P.E.

Dr. Yun Zhou is an online PDH course provider of continuing education courses for professional engineers.

 

Dr. Zhou is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in geotechnical engineering, and of the Carnegie Mellon University with MSIT degree in information technology management. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Pennsylvania. Dr. Zhou is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the National Society of Professional Engineers.

Dr. Zhou has over 25 years of hands-on experience in a wide spectrum of geotechnical engineering applications, including geotechnical field and laboratory investigations, site characterization and design parameter selection, design analysis and design detailing, design implementation through drawings, specifications, and plans, and construction engineering support. Currently, Dr. Zhou is a geotechnical specialist to provide leadership and expert technical support to a Fortune 500 company's billion-dollar mega-projects involving building foundations, highways and railways, ports, and waste containment facilities.


Dr. Zhou published over 18 technical papers and often presented those papers at international and national conferences. He appeared twice in court as an expert witness for lawsuits involving landfill design and slope stability. Dr. Zhou has developed and taught graduate-level slope stability courses. He has been tutoring junior engineers through a monthly technical presentation, and developed several continuing education courses in soil and rock mechanics for professional engineers learning geotechnical designs.

For situations where shallow foundations are inappropriate for support of structural elements, deep foundations are necessary to transfer structure load through unsuitable subsurface to suitable bearing strata.

 

This course, as a part of Geotechnical Engineering Series, covers basic theories, engineering evaluations, design approaches, and practical construction quality control (CQC) procedures for design and construction of deep foundations.

 

This online PDH course is applicable to geotechnical, civil, mining, structural, and environmental engineers, as well as design and construction personnel involved with the planning, design, and construction of shallow foundations.

 

In this course, you need to review Chapter 9, Deep Foundations of the Federal Highway Administration Reference Manual Volume II, SOILS AND FOUNDATIONS, Publication No. FHWA NHI-06-089, provided below. Once you complete your course review, you need to take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of sixty (60) questions to earn 12 PDH credits. The quiz will be based on Chapter 9 of this FHWA Publication.

 

Learning Objectives

This continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Understanding the general approach to foundation design
  • Learning about the various types of deep foundations including driven and CIP (cast-in-place) piles
  • Familiarizing with the pile design concept and procedure
