COURSE TITLE: In-Situ Air Sparging
COURSE NO: C14-001
COURSE PROVIDER: Gilbert Gedeon, P.E.
In-Situ Air Sparging
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course provides guidance for evaluation of the feasibility of in-situ air sparging (IAS) for remediation of contaminated groundwater and soil. This course also describes design and operational considerations for IAS systems.

In-Situ Air Sparging (IAS) is a rapidly emerging remediation technology for treating contaminants in saturated zone soils and groundwater. It is a relatively easy technology to implement and it is well known to regulatory agencies. IAS involves the injection of air, pure oxygen, or other gases below the water table which may result in the removal of contaminants through volatilization or bioremediation. In a less common application, IAS can also be used to immobilize contaminants through chemical changes such as precipitation.

This 14 PDH online course is intended for civil and environmental engineers as well as other technical professionals interested in learning about the design, operation, and feasibility of IAS systems.
Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Learning about the background of IAS
  • Familiarizing with the underlying physical process and technology used in IAS
  • Understanding the basics of feasibility evaluations and site characterization
  • Gaining insight into pilot testing guidance and strategies
  • Familiarizing with design considerations for IAS
  • Learning about operation and maintenance requirements for IAS systems
  • Familiarizing with IAS system shutdown strategies
  • Gaining insight into administrative issues such as regulations, patents, and safety

COURSE TITLE: Solid Waste Disposal Facility - Closure and Post Closure Criteria
COURSE NO: C03-005
COURSE PROVIDER: Gilbert Gedeon, P.E.
Solid Waste Disposal Facility - Closure and Post Closure Criteria
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course describes EPA's closure and post-closure criteria for solid waste disposal facilities. The criteria for landfill closure focus on two central themes: (1) the need to establish low-maintenance cover systems and (2) the need to design a final cover that minimizes the infiltration of precipitation into the waste.

Critical technical issues that must be faced by the designer include the following:

  • Degree and rate of post-closure and stresses imposed on soil liner components
  • Long-term durability and survivability of cover system
  • Long-term waste decomposition and management of landfill leachate and gases
  • Environmental performance of the combined bottom liner and final cover system

Full closure and post-closure requirements apply to municipal solid waste landfill (MSWLF) units that have been receiving waste since October 9, 1993. For MSWLF units that stopped receiving wastes prior to October 9, 1993, only the final cover requirements apply.

This 3 PDH online course is applicable to owners, operators of MSWLF units, as well as engineers, designers, managers, construction workers and any other personnel involved with the closure and post-closure of municipal solid waste landfills.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Final cover design
  • Alternative final cover design
  • Closure plan
  • Closure criteria
  • Post-closure care requirements
  • Post-closure plans
Course Document

In this professional engineering CEU course, you need to review Chapter 6, “Closure and Post-Closure” of the EPA “Solid Waste Disposal Facility Criteria” Technical Manual.

Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course presents the laws and rules of ethics and professional responsibility governing the practice of engineering in the State of New York. Excerpts from Parts 17 and 29 of the Rules of Board of Regents, which relate to the laws and rules of profession conduct are presented in this course.

Engineering ethics is (1) the study of moral issues and decisions confronting individuals and organizations involved in engineering and (2) the study of related questions about moral conduct, character, ideals and relationships of peoples and organizations involved in technological development (Martin and Schinzinger, Ethics in Engineering).

Since engineers are faced with frequent moral and ethical dilemmas while practicing their engineering profession, this course will provide you with moral and ethical guidance in your decision making process. Most importantly, it will provide you with insight on how to conduct, respect and protect your engineering practice with the utmost professionalism.

This 1 PDH online course is applicable to Professional Engineers licensed in the State of New York and who are required to demonstrate continuing professional competency in engineering ethics as a condition of their license renewal. For each renewal period, every licensee must complete thirty six (36) professional development hours, at least one (1) of which must be relative to the principals of professional responsibility, conduct and ethics.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education engineering course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Overview of the laws and rules regulating the practice of engineering in the State of New York Understanding the roles of the New York Board and its disciplinary authority
  • Learning about engineering ethics and the rules and rules of professional conduct and responsibility
