COURSE TITLE: The Evolution of the U.S. Automotive Industry
COURSE NO: D05-004
COURSE PROVIDER: Robert Tata, P.E.
The Evolution of the U.S. Automotive Industry
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course presents the evolution of the U.S. auto industry by tracing historical events relating to the origin of the automotive history to Detroit, Michigan. Michigan is a glove-shaped piece of land, off the beaten track, wedged up between two lakes, and with sometimes very inclement weather. Ohio and Indiana; who are also instrumental in the founding of the auto industry; are located adjacent to Michigan and have the same weather patterns. Despite these seeming disadvantages, the author traces what he thinks are the circumstances that lead to Detroit becoming the automotive capital of the world.

He starts in England where an event occurred 200 years ago that transformed the world of engineering making the automobile and automobile designs possible and functional. He traces the origin of the key materials that make up an automotive vehicle and how they aided Detroit in the automotive industry. He describes the brilliant and famous people who lived in the Midwestern part of the country who aided Detroit in its famous rise to prominence. He sums up Detroit's success to famous people, an abundance of key materials, and great lakes.

This 5 PDH online course if for Mechanical Engineers, Automotive Engineers, Power Train Engineers, Design Engineers and any other discipline dealing with the automotive industry.

COURSE TITLE: Principles of an Internal Combustion Engine
COURSE NO: M03-046
COURSE PROVIDER: Elie Tawil, P.E., LEED AP
Principles of an Internal Combustion Engine
Course Highlights

This online engineering course presents the operational principles and basic mechanisms of the internal combustion engine.

The power of an internal combustion engine comes from burning a mixture of fuel and air in a small, enclosed space. When this mixture burns, it expands significantly; building pressure that pushes the piston down, in turn rotating the crankshaft. Eventually, this motion is transferred through the transmission and out to the drive wheels to move the vehicle.

The automobile is a familiar object to all of us. The engine that moves it is one of the most fascinating and talked about of all the complex machines we use today. This machine is what we call the internal combustion engine.

This 3 PDH online course is intended for mechanical and industrial engineers, designers, manufacturers and anyone interested in gaining a better understanding of the basics of an internal combustion engine.
Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Understanding the principles of operation, the different classifications, the measurements and performance standards of an internal combustion engine
  • Identifying the series of events /cycles in a gasoline engine
  • Identifying the series of events /cycles in a diesel engine
  • Understanding the differences between a four-stroke cycle engine and a two-stroke cycle engine
  • Recognizing the differences in the types, cylinder arrangements, and valve arrangements of internal combustion engines
  • Identifying the terms, engine measurements, and performance standards of an internal combustion engine

COURSE TITLE: Plug-in Electric Vehicle Handbook
COURSE NO: E02-022
COURSE PROVIDER: Elie Tawil, P.E., LEED AP
Plug-in Electric Vehicle Handbook
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course presents the considerations for hosting public charging stations for plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs). It provides detailed information about PEVs, charging basics, benefits, costs, and discusses the installation and maintenance of charging stations.

Concerns about the environmental impacts of conventional internal combustion engines (ICE) vehicles sparked a PEV renaissance at the end of the 20th century. Today, PEVs are back and ready to compete with — and complement — the ubiquitous ICE technology. First, advances in electric-drive technologies enabled commercialization of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), which integrate an ICE or other power source with batteries, regenerative braking, and an electric motor to boost fuel economy. Continued technological advances have spawned plug-in HEVs (PHEVs), which integrate small ICEs (or other power sources) and large, grid-chargeable batteries that enable all-electric driving ranges of 10 to 40 miles or more. Advanced technologies have also enabled manufacturers to introduce a new generation of EVs that don’t use an ICE at all. At the same time, charging station technologies have evolved to facilitate a range of charging options and business models.

This 2 PDH online course is intended for mechanical and electrical engineers as well as others interested in learning more about plug-in electric vehicles.
