This online engineering PDH course presents the evolution of the U.S. auto industry by tracing historical events relating to the origin of the automotive history to Detroit, Michigan. Michigan is a glove-shaped piece of land, off the beaten track, wedged up between two lakes, and with sometimes very inclement weather. Ohio and Indiana; who are also instrumental in the founding of the auto industry; are located adjacent to Michigan and have the same weather patterns. Despite these seeming disadvantages, the author traces what he thinks are the circumstances that lead to Detroit becoming the automotive capital of the world.

 

He starts in England where an event occurred 200 years ago that transformed the world of engineering making the automobile and automobile designs possible and functional. He traces the origin of the key materials that make up an automotive vehicle and how they aided Detroit in the automotive industry. He describes the brilliant and famous people who lived in the Midwestern part of the country who aided Detroit in its famous rise to prominence. He sums up Detroit's success to famous people, an abundance of key materials, and great lakes.

Concerns about the environmental impacts of conventional internal combustion engines (ICE) vehicles sparked a PEV renais­sance at the end of the 20th century. Today, PEVs are back and ready to compete with — and complement — the ubiquitous ICE tech­nology. First, advances in electric-drive technologies enabled commercialization of hybrid electric vehi­cles (HEVs), which integrate an ICE or other power source with batteries, regenerative braking, and an electric motor to boost fuel economy. Continued technological advances have spawned plug-in HEVs (PHEVs), which integrate small ICEs (or other power sources) and large, grid-chargeable batteries that enable all-electric driving ranges of 10 to 40 miles or more. Advanced technologies have also enabled manufactur­ers to introduce a new generation of EVs that don’t use an ICE at all. It explains in simple terms how the various ratios of a planetary gearset are used in automotive automatic transmissions and how to calculate the forces on their bearings.
