Raw Gas Compression

COURSE NO: P08-002
PDH CREDIT: 8
COURSE PROVIDER: David Simpson, P.E.
Raw Gas Compression
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course provides basic information on technologies that are widely appropriate to raw-gas compression.

“Raw gas” is a compound of gases, liquids, and solids that is unique to its source.  Often an entire reservoir will provide a mixture that is roughly homogeneous across the field, but sometimes each formation in each well presents unique mixtures.  For example, it is common for a field to go from “sweet” to “sour” over time with the accumulation of sour gas (H2S).  When this “souring” occurs it usually happens one well at a time, so equipment designed for sweet gas must be modified or replaced.

Other signs of individuality in gas production include changes in the mix of inert gases like nitrogen and carbon dioxide and the gas-water-ratio of the stream over time. When it has been decided that the reservoir would benefit from compression, the choice of compression technology becomes a primary focus that requires knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of the available technologies.

This 8 PDH online course is applicable to petroleum and mechanical engineers who are interested in improving their knowledge on raw gas compression technologies.
Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Familiarizing with the various technologies for raw gas compression
  • Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the various technologies
  • Learning how to assess the functionality of the several technologies
  • Gaining a general overview on the reliable and economic power source of gas compression
  • Learning about the different types of compressors “control valves” and capacity control
  • Knowing what is important to the choice of technologies
