Project Mercury
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course provides information and general knowledge on project Mercury that aimed to put a man into space and bring him safely back to earth.

Traveling in space has been a thought of man throughout history.  The actual beginning of the effort began during the Cold War. Project Mercury was the United States program to put a man into Earth’s orbit and return him safely.  Project Mercury was the basis for more ambitious programs.  It was the first of three programs; Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo that would lead the United States to the Moon.

Project mercury was a huge engineering challenge. The Arms Race that occurred after World War 2 led to the Space Race: part of the arms race was test pilots to fly higher and faster than the last and to always try to stay ahead of the Soviet Union. Project Mercury had three main objectives at the time.  The first was to place a manned spacecraft into orbit around the earth. The second was to evaluate man’s performance capabilities and ability to function in space. The third objective was to safely recover the man and spacecraft.

This 1 PDH online course is applicable to engineers who are interested in gaining a better understanding of Mercury Project.
