Future Highways - Automated Vehicles

COURSE NO: C03-064
PDH CREDIT: 3
Future Highways - Automated Vehicles
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course provides an overview of what automated vehicles are and how they will impact the future of highway transportation with respect to mobility, energy consumption, vehicle emissions, and safety.

It has been approximately 100 years since the motorized vehicle replaced the horse and buggy. The future of highway transportation is now undergoing another major revolution as engineers across numerous disciplines work towards moving the responsibility of driving the automobile from human to machine to improve the health of our country’s economy.

The development of cars driven completely without aid by a human driver, commonly referred to as ‘automated’ vehicles, are those in which at least some aspect of a safety-critical control function (e.g., steering, throttle, or braking) occurs without direct driver input.  Automated vehicles may be autonomous (i.e., use only internal sensors for vehicle control functions) or may be connected (i.e., use communication technology to communicate with roadside infrastructure and/or nearby vehicles), or both.

This 3 PDH online course is intended for civil, transportation, and environmental engineers as well as anyone interested in learning about Future Highways – Automated Vehicles.
