Detection for Traffic Signals

COURSE NO: C02-057
PDH CREDIT: 2
Detection for Traffic Signals
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course presents information regarding vehicle and pedestrian detection systems used in modern traffic signal control.  The material is intended to provide a practical overview of detection types, components and operational characteristics.

Vehicle detection is used for a variety of traffic control purposes. Detectors are used to:

  • Count vehicles;
  • Operate gates at exits of parking garages and other restricted entrances;
  • Control vehicles entering a freeway ("ramp metering");
  • Provide incident detection on freeways by measuring speeds and other traffic characteristics;
  • Provide Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) for automatic toll collection;
  • Provide emergency vehicle detection for use in signal preemption; and
  • Control actuated traffic signals.

This 2 PDH online course is intended for traffic engineers and transportation design professionals who are involved in the planning and design of detection systems for traffic signals.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Recognizing the various components of a traffic signal detection system
  • Knowing the effect of detector length and location on signal operation
  • Understanding the advantages of non-locking operation
  • Recognizing the various types of underground and overhead detection
  • Understanding how to calculate the inductance of a loop assembly
