Critical Mineral Resources of the United States - Graphite

COURSE NO: P01-004
PDH CREDIT: 1
COURSE PROVIDER: James Weaver, P.E.
Critical Mineral Resources of the United States - Graphite
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course provides information on the global distribution, availability, mining, production and the industrial use of the mineral resource, Graphite, which is considered a critical mineral resource in the United States.

In the past several decades many changes have taken place in the resource sector within the United States. These changes have been exacerbated by the increased use of certain elements critical to manufacturing and high technology. The mineral elements were listed as critical and (or) strategic in one or more of the recent studies based on assessed likelihood of supply interruption and the possible cost of such a disruption to the assessor.

Graphite is natural form of the element carbon and is among mineral elements considered to be a critical resource in the United States.  At present, no graphite is mined in the United States. Graphite used in the United States is either imported or artificially manufactured using coke feedstock. Production of natural graphite is dominated by China, India, and Brazil, which export graphite worldwide.

This 1 PDH online course is applicable to industrial, mining, chemical, and geological engineers that are involved with mining, processing, and industrial use of critical minerals and their chemical constituents.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Familiarizing with world graphite production and resources and the distribution of Graphite deposits and districts
  • Familiarizing with commercial classifications of Graphite
  • Gaining a general overview on demand and availability of supply of Graphite
  • Learning about mining and beneficiation methods
  • Understanding mineralogy and geochemistry of Graphite
  • Exploring the environmental considerations including sources and fate in the Environment, mine waste characteristics, human health concerns, ecological health concerns and mine closure
