Illinois State Requirements
Professional Engineers
The state requirements for Illinois Professional Engineers are provided below:
PDH's Required:
30
Renewal Period:
Biennial as follows:
- By November 30 of odd years for Professional Engineers
- By November 30 of even years for Structural Engineers
Course Pre-approval:
The State Board does not pre-approve continuing education courses. You must select a course activity that meets your State Board criteria.
Sponsor Pre-approval:
The State Board does not pre-approve continuing education sponsors/providers.
Course Applicability:
The course must have a clear purpose and objective which will maintain, improve or expand the skills and knowledge of the licensee relevant to the practice of engineering and necessary to safeguard the health, safety, property and welfare of the public.
Of the 30 PDHs required:
- A minimum of 1 PDH must be earned in engineering ethics/professional conduct;
- A minimum of 1 PDH must be earned in IL engineering statutes and rules; and
- A minimum of 1 PDH must be earned in sexual harassment prevention training.
Online PDH's:
Professional Engineers and Structural Engineers:
- There are no limitations on the number of PDHs earned online.
Structural Engineers:
- A maximum of 10 PDHs may be earned for attending in-house courses.
PDH Deferral:
A maximum of 15 PDHs may be carried over into the next renewal period but shall not include the requirements of the Illinois ethics, statutes and rules, or sexual harassment prevention training.

Professional Land Surveyors
The state requirements for Illinois Professional Land Surveyors are provided below:

Course Applicability:
The course must have a clear purpose and objective which will maintain, improve or expand the skills and knowledge of the licensee relevant to the practice of land surveying and necessary to safeguard the health, safety, property and welfare of the public.
Of the 20 PDHs required:
- A minimum of 2 PDHs must be earned in land surveying ethics/professional conduct;
- A minimum of 4 PDHs must be earned in IL land surveying statutes and rules; and
- A minimum of 1 PDH must be earned in sexual harassment prevention training.
Online PDH's:
There are no limitations on the number of PDHs earned online.
PDH Deferral:
No PDHs may be carried over into the next renewal period.
