Beyond the Code: How Wind Tunnel Testing Changes Structural Design Decisions

COURSE NO: S06-011
PDH CREDIT: 6
Beyond the Code: How Wind Tunnel Testing Changes Structural Design Decisions
Course Highlights

This course examines the principles of advanced wind tunnel testing for tall and complex structures. It explains how wind tunnel data supports structural analysis and performance-based wind design.

Modern building codes provide a reliable basis for wind design but cannot fully capture the aerodynamic behavior of tall, slender, and irregular structures. Wind tunnel testing enables engineers to evaluate realistic wind effects, improve structural performance, optimize façade design, and assess occupant comfort.

This course covers the limitations of code-based wind design, wind tunnel testing methodologies, interpretation of test results, structural response to wind loading, torsional and cross-wind effects, localized façade pressures, occupant comfort assessment, and the integration of wind tunnel data into engineering design. It also emphasizes practical engineering judgment for situations where prescriptive code provisions are no longer sufficient.

This 6 PDH online course is applicable to structural engineers and civil engineers, as well as other technical professionals interested in learning more about advanced wind tunnel testing and performance-based wind design.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Understanding wind–structure interaction and its effects on structural and façade performance
  • Learning how wind tunnel testing is planned, executed, and integrated into structural design
  • Familiarizing with torsional response, cross-wind excitation, localized pressures, and occupant comfort criteria
  • Understanding the interaction between structural systems, cladding, vibration control, and occupant comfort
  • Learning how to interpret wind tunnel results through practical engineering case studies
  • Familiarizing with emerging technologies, including CFD, reduced-order models, digital monitoring, and digital twins for wind engineering
