Number Systems
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course provides an introduction to the various types of number systems used by computers and in computer programs.

While the decimal number system is convenient to humans, it is not practical for use by computers.  Computers use electrical signals which assume two (2) states, on and off for example, to represent numbers.  Computers are also limited to the number of digits that they can use to represent numbers.  As such, methods must be used to convert numbers from a human readable form to a form that computers can use.

This 4 PDH online course is intended for design professionals, as well as, those who require a basic knowledge to design and review computer hardware and software designs.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Recognizing different types of number systems as they relate to computers
  • Identifying and defining unit, number, base/radix, positional notation, and most and least significant digits as they relate to decimal, binary, octal, and hexadecimal number systems
  • Adding and subtracting in binary, octal, and hexadecimal number systems
  • Converting values from decimal, binary, octal, hexadecimal, and binary-coded decimal number systems to each other and back to the other systems
  • Adding in binary coded decimal
Course Document
In this professional engineering CEU course, you need to review NAVEDTRA 14185A, Chapter 1, "Number Systems", which is extracted from Module 13 of the NAVEDTRA publication, "Number Systems and Logic Circuits".

Course Quiz
Once you complete your course review, you need to take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of twenty (25) questions to earn 4 PDH credits. The quiz will be based on Chapter 1 of this NAVEDTRA publication.
The minimum passing score is 70%. There is no time limit on the quiz, and you can take it multiple times until you pass at no additional cost.
Certificate of Completion

Upon successful completion of the quiz, print your Certificate of Completion instantly. (Note: if you are paying by check or money order, you will be able to print it after we receive your payment.) For your convenience, we will also email it to you. Please note that you can log in to your account at any time to access and print your Certificate of Completion.
