COURSE PROVIDER: Robert Tata, P.E.
Ball Bearing Design
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course presents several ball bearing design principles that are probably not too well known outside the ball bearing world. The information provided in this course originates with an organization that pioneered many ball bearing materials and products that are used throughout the industry today.

The discussion starts out with the basics such as the description, terminology, industry standards, and types of ball bearings. The role of Hertz compressive stress and the ball diameter in the design of ball bearings is revealed with pertinent mathematical exercises. There is an explanation of how bearings fail, how bearing life is calculated, and why bearing life is expressed as a probability number. An excellent example is given of how graphical analysis can be used to determine preload and deflection of two angular contact ball bearings that are used to improve the precision of a machine tool spindle. Finally, complete discussions are given on the various types of closures (seals) that are available and how they aid the performance of ball bearings. Detailed information is given for the materials that are used in ball bearing components with a chart showing the temperature limitations of each. An innovative graph is included that can be used to calculate the oil viscosity needed for most ball bearing applications.

This 2 PDH online course is intended for mechanical engineers, aeronautical engineers, automotive engineers, design engineers, and any other discipline involved in the design of gears in machines or mechanical power transmission.
