COURSE PROVIDER: Elie Tawil, P.E., LEED AP
Introduction to Radiation
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH interactive presentation provides a brief outline on the types of radiation produced by natural and man-made sources, the typical radiation doses and dose limits, along with the health effects associated with radiation exposure.

Radiation is energy in the form of waves or streams of particles. There are many kinds and forms of radiation all around us, and their sources can be both natural and man-made. Sound and visible light are familiar forms of radiation; other types include ultraviolet radiation, infrared radiation, and radio and television signals. However, uncontrolled use of man-made radiation carries a potential risk to the health and safety of workers and the public.

This presentation provides clear and simple information about radiation: what it is, where it comes from and how it is used. It also presents information on radiation health effects, radiation doses and how the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission ensures the safety of the Canadian nuclear sector through its comprehensive regulatory framework and vigilant oversight.

This 1 PDH online interactive presentation is applicable to safety engineers and professionals who are interested in learning more about nuclear safety.

Learning Objectives
This continuing education interactive presentation is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
  • Understanding the definitions of atoms, isotopes and radioisotopes
  • Familiarizing with the types of radiation: non-ionizing and ionizing radiation
  • Knowing the natural and man-made sources of ionizing radiation
  • Understanding the health effects of radiation exposure and how it causes cancer
  • Familiarizing with the epidemiological evidence of the effect of the radiation exposure
  • Identifying the radiation dose limits and the typical radiation doses produced by natural and man-made sources
  • Learning the types of radiation doses: absorbed, equivalent and effective dose
  • Familiarizing with the rules regulating radiation
