COURSE TITLE: Rock Engineering: Background
COURSE NO: G07-002
COURSE PROVIDER: Yun Zhou, Ph.D., P.E.
Rock Engineering: Background
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course covers history, development, probability of failure, and design criteria of rock engineering.

Early development of rock engineering started with treating rock as a continuum material so that matured elastic theory could be applied. Those efforts resulted in a discipline known as rock mechanics. Later development involved treating rock mass as both continuum and discrete materials, depending on the scale of the rock mass, to reflect real rock mass that ranges from an intact, continuum single rock block to a conglomerate of discrete rock blocks separated by faults, bedding planes, and joints known as discontinuities.  During the past few decades this subject has come together in the discipline which we know today as rock engineering.

This 7 PDH online course is applicable to civil, mining, structural, and geotechnical engineers, as well as design and construction personnel involved with the planning, design, and construction of building structures on, in, and with rocks.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Understanding the history and development of rock engineering
  • Familiarizing with the theories and applications of rock engineering
  • Learning about the criteria of acceptable design in rock engineering
  • Learning about the Factor of Safety and probability of failure in rock engineering
Course Document

In this professional engineering CEU course, you need to review three notes of "Practical Rock Engineering" that were selected from a free set of notes offered online to the public by Dr. Evert Hoek (http://www.rocscience.com/education/hoeks_corner).

Rock Engineering: Background (8.9 MB)
Course Quiz
Once you complete your course review, you need to take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of forty (40) questions to earn 7 PDH credits. The quiz will be based on the three notes of "Practical Rock Engineering".
The minimum passing score is 70%. There is no time limit on the quiz, and you can take it multiple times until you pass at no additional cost.
Certificate of Completion

Upon successful completion of the quiz, print your Certificate of Completion instantly. (Note: if you are paying by check or money order, you will be able to print it after we receive your payment.) For your convenience, we will also email it to you. Please note that you can log in to your account at any time to access and print your Certificate of Completion.
