COURSE TITLE: An Introduction to Static Electricity and Lightning Protection Systems
COURSE NO: E02-018
An Introduction to Static Electricity and Lightning Protection Systems
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course provides technical guidance and design requirements for static electricity and lightning protection systems as well as related grounding systems for facilities and other structures. The information provided here may be utilized by electrical engineers in the development of the plans, specifications and calculations, and may serve as the minimum electrical design requirements.  Project conditions may dictate the need for a design that exceeds these minimum requirements.

Static electricity and lightning and protection systems are used to prevent or lessen damage from electrostatic discharges or lightning strikes to structures. These protection systems mitigate the fire hazards posed to structures. A static electricity or lightning protection system provides a low-impedance path for the electric current to lessen the heating effect of current flowing through flammable structural materials. If the current travels through porous and water-saturated materials, these materials may literally explode if their water content is flashed to steam by heat produced from the high current.

This 2 PDH online course is intended for electrical engineers, design professionals, construction managers and other technical personnel seeking an introduction to lightning and static electricity protection systems.

COURSE TITLE: Strike Terminations for Lightning Protection Systems
COURSE NO: E03-012
COURSE PROVIDER: John Tobias, Ph.D., P.E.
Strike Terminations for Lightning Protection Systems
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course provides information concerning the Strike Termination Subsystem of a Lightning Protection System (LPS). It is one of the five following subsystems of a lightning protection system:

  • Strike Termination Subsystem
  • Conductor Subsystem
  • Grounding Electrode Subsystem
  • Equipotential Bonding Subsystem
  • Surge Protection Subsystem

An overview of the complete lightning protection systems and its functioning is given in CED Course No. E02-009, Fundamentals of Lightning Protection Systems. Completing that course is recommended as a prerequisite to this course but is not necessary. This course will discuss the details of implementing the Strike Termination Subsystem (STS) which is one of the necessary subsystems of the lightning protection system.  No single subsystem, of itself, constitutes complete protection against the effects of lightning.  Each of the subsystems works in a complimentary fashion.

The STS intercepts the lightning event.  Specifications are given to arrange the receptors of the strike, called strike terminations, in such a fashion that protects a structure and adjacent areas.  These specifications are based on the guidance of well-accepted design standards commonly used for lightning protection. Specific design requirements can be found in the National Fire Protection Associations’ Standard for the Installation of Lightning Protection Systems,’  NFPA 780.

This 3 PDH online course is applicable to architects, civil and electrical engineers, as well as design and construction personnel involved with the planning and design of structures requiring lightning protection.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Understanding the purpose and function of the STS
  • Knowing the material requirements for the STS
  • Understanding the concept of Zone of Protection afforded by the STS
  • Knowing the specifications for the arrangement of strike terminations to protect a structure from lightning as part of a total LPS
  • Identifying the engineering and construction standards for lightning protection systems commonly used in the United States

COURSE TITLE: Grounding System Theory and Practice
COURSE NO: E04-027
Grounding System Theory and Practice
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course provides an introduction to grounding system design. It addresses various grounding problems, describes how grounding systems are modelled and explains how step and touch voltages are calculated.

In underground-fault conditions, the flow of current will result in voltage gradients within and around the substation, not only between structures and nearby earth, but also along the ground surface. In a properly designed system, this gradient should not exceed the limits that can be tolerated by the human body.

The purpose of a ground mat study is to provide for the safety and well-being of anyone that can be exposed to the potential differences that can exist in a station during a severe fault. The general requirements for industrial power system grounding are similar to those of utility systems under similar service conditions. The differences arise from the specific requirements of the manufacturing or process operations.

This 4 PDH online course is applicable to electrical engineers with a desire to understand the fundamentals of grounding practices and safety issues related to grounding design.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Understanding why grounding systems are important part of commercial and industrial power systems
  • Learning how to calculate step and touch voltages
