Sustainable Aviation Fuels Implementation Framework: Pathways to 2030 and 2050

This online engineering PDH course offers a clear overview of the U.S. Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) Implementation Framework and the national strategy to meet the SAF Grand Challenge targets for 2030 and 2050.
This course explains how federal agencies are coordinating to advance feedstocks, conversion technologies, and supply-chain systems that support aviation decarbonization. It explores the six core action areas of the framework which are Feedstock Innovation, Conversion Technology, Supply Chain Development, Policy and Valuation Analysis, Enabling End Use, and Communication & Stakeholder Engagement. Also, it highlights current capabilities, emerging technologies, and priority gaps that shape the pathway from research to commercial deployment.
In addition, this course outlines near-, mid-, and long-term priorities, including HEFA expansion, ethanol-to-jet improvements, synthetic fuels, carbon capture integration, and advanced biomass systems. Through case studies and modeling insights, participants will understand how agencies like DOE, DOT, USDA, EPA, and NASA work together to reduce aviation’s carbon intensity, lower scale-up risks, and support sustainable, economically viable SAF growth.
This 7 PDH online course is applicable to aerospace and mechanical engineers, as well as other technical professionals interested in the technical and strategic aspects of evaluating SAF technologies.
This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Understanding the SAF production scale needed to meet the 2030 and 2050 Grand Challenge targets
- Identifying key feedstock categories and their life-cycle carbon intensity and sustainability
- Evaluating major U.S. RD&D efforts and the readiness of key SAF conversion pathways
- Assessing innovation priorities in feedstocks, process improvements, and supply-chain build-out
- Comparing TEA and LCA frameworks, policy incentives, and emission-reduction impacts
- Exploring strategies to leverage existing fuel infrastructure and cross-sector integration to strengthen SAF deployment
