Sustainability, Rehabilitation, and Management of Pavements

COURSE NO: C05-031
PDH CREDIT: 5
Sustainability, Rehabilitation, and Management of Pavements
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course provides a detailed description on pavement sustainability, maintenance and rehabilitation, recycling, and management.

Sustainability is the concept of satisfying the needs of the current demand without compromising potential consumers' ability to meet their own needs, taking into account the three main components: economic, environmental, and social impacts.

The combined effects of traffic loading and the environment will cause every pavement, no matter how well-designed/constructed to deteriorate over time. Maintenance and rehabilitation are what we use to slow down or reset this deterioration process.  Maintenance actions help slow the rate of deterioration by identifying and addressing specific pavement deficiencies that contribute to overall deterioration. Rehabilitation is the act of repairing portions of an existing pavement to reset the deterioration process.

Pavement recycling is a technique where an existing degraded pavement is modified and transformed into a homogeneous structure that can support the traffic requirements.  Materials from the existing pavement are reused in the construction of a new layer and can result in considerable savings of material, money, and energy.

Pavement management is the process of planning the maintenance and repair of a network of roadways or other paved facilities in order to optimize pavement conditions over the entire network. Pavement management incorporates life cycle costs into a more systematic approach to minor and major road maintenance and reconstruction projects.

This 5 PDH online course is applicable to transportation and roadway engineers interested in learning about sustainability, maintenance and rehabilitation, recycling, and management of pavements.
