Space-Based Solar Power
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course provides a comprehensive exploration of the emerging field of Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP), as detailed in NASA’s 2024 report Space-Based Solar Power.

This course explores Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP) as an innovative solution to the growing global demand for sustainable energy and the pursuit of net-zero emissions. It delves into the strategic potential of delivering continuous solar power from orbit to Earth, examining two future system designs: RD1 (Innovative Heliostat Swarm) and RD2 (Mature Planar Array), projected to operate by 2050. This course also introduces SBSP as a complementary technology to terrestrial renewables, emphasizing its promise for long-term, uninterrupted clean energy generation.

In addition, this course covers the technical and regulatory foundations necessary to evaluate SBSP viability. Topics include system architecture, Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) modeling, and greenhouse gas (GHG) analysis using EIO-LCA methodology. It explores key enabling technologies such as autonomous operations, in-space servicing and manufacturing (ISAM), and power beaming, along with considerations for assembly, maintenance, and end-of-life disposal. It also addresses critical factors like launch costs, hardware lifespan, spectrum allocation, debris mitigation, and NASA’s evolving role in shaping international SBSP initiatives.

This 3 PDH course is intended for aerospace engineers, energy experts, as well as other technical professionals who are interested in space-based solar power.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Understanding the foundational principles of Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP) and how it collects, converts, and transmits solar energy from orbit to Earth, and its potential role in global net-zero strategies
  • Identifying key SBSP system components and architectures (RD1 and RD2), including transmission methods and challenges in assembly, maintenance, and disposal
  • Analyzing lifecycle costs and GHG emissions using LCOE and EIO-LCA, and assessing how technical and economic factors affect feasibility
  • Exploring critical enabling technologies like ISAM, autonomous systems, electric propulsion, and wireless power, and their role in improving cost and performance
  • Understanding the regulatory landscape, including spectrum allocation, debris mitigation, and NASA’s role, along with current national and international initiatives
  • Evaluating risks and opportunities in SBSP deployment, such as atmospheric impacts, infrastructure needs, and its potential to enhance energy security and equity
