COURSE NO: M06-024
PDH CREDIT: 6
COURSE PROVIDER: Robert Tata, P.E.
Principles and Use of Ball and Roller Bearings
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course provides an overview of the principles and use of ball and roller bearings, including the purpose, description, operation, manufacture and types of ball and roller bearings along with appropriate number of explanatory drawings illustrating the basics. A simple formula is used to calculate the expected life of each of a pair of bearings mounted in a simple setting. This course also presents the installation, lubrication, and application of ball and roller bearings along with their respective sketches. Finally, it provides a number of drawings showing bearings in actual pieces of mechanical equipment, with expert analysis explaining their usage.

Bearings are truly a wonder of nature. They make life much easier for almost all human beings living on this planet. They can be found in the smallest electric motors to the largest pieces of mining equipment. Bearings operate so efficiently that they are sometimes referred to as being "anti-friction" devices.

This 6 PDH online course is intended for mechanical engineers, automotive engineers, design engineers, and any other discipline interested in gaining a better understanding of the principles and use of ball and rolling bearings in machine design or mechanical power transmission.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Identifying and naming the various components that make up anti-friction bearings
  • Understanding the relative motions that take place inside a bearing when it is rotating
  • Familiarizing with the basic idea of the important aspects of installation, lubrication, and application of bearings
  • Understanding of how expected life is calculated in a typical application
  • Knowing the difference between ball and roller bearings and how they are used
