Material Design: Fiber Orientation for a Composite Exposed to a Fatigue Load

COURSE NO: T01-003
PDH CREDIT: 1
COURSE PROVIDER: Ahmed Paridie, P.E.
Material Design: Fiber Orientation for a Composite Exposed to a Fatigue Load
Course Highlights

This course examines the principles of fiber orientation optimization in fiber-reinforced composite materials to improve fatigue performance.

Fiber-reinforced composite materials offer engineers the ability to tailor mechanical properties by controlling fiber orientation to match loading conditions. Because cyclic loading can initiate and propagate fatigue damage, selecting an appropriate fiber orientation is essential for reducing critical ply stresses, improving structural performance, and extending the service life of composite structures.

This course covers the mechanics of stress transformation in composite laminates, fatigue loading conditions, optimization of fiber orientation, and the evaluation of ply stresses for plates, shafts, and pressure vessels. It also demonstrates the use of a MATLAB-based computational tool to calculate global and local stresses, analyze the effects of fiber orientation, and identify optimal ply angles for enhanced fatigue performance.

This 1 PDH online course is applicable to mechanical engineers and materials engineers, as well as other technical professionals interested in learning more about fiber orientation optimization in composite materials.
