Impact of Soil Properties on Land Use

COURSE NO: L06-010
PDH CREDIT: 6
COURSE PROVIDER: Elie Tawil, P.E., LEED AP
Impact of Soil Properties on Land Use
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course explores the frameworks that convert raw soil data into actionable predictions for land use and infrastructure development.

This course demonstrates the shift from historical qualitative classes toward sophisticated logic models that quantify a soil's membership in specific suitability or limitation sets. It evaluates the multifaceted role of the Soil Survey Geographic Database (SSURGO) and the Web Soil Survey in supporting decision-making across diverse sectors.

Furthermore, this course explores how raster-based soil interpretations from digital soil mapping can improve the accuracy of predictions by using climate and geomorphic data. Also, it combines geodetic principles and pedological insights to create a method for evaluating soil potential and addressing specific hazards.

This 6 PDH online course is applicable to civil engineers, land surveyors, as well as other technical professionals who are interested in learning more about the impact of soil properties on land use.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Recognizing soil behavior and land-use suitability by synthesizing physical, chemical, and landscape attributes through standardized interpretive models
  • Evaluating the degree of soil membership in limitation or suitability classes using system concepts and membership functions
  • Implementing site-specific screening protocols for infrastructure projects
  • Modeling environmental and agricultural outcomes
  • Applying database aggregation methods, such as dominant condition or weighted average, to represent map unit variability within GIS environments.
  • Understanding the transition to spatially explicit raster-based interpretations to improve the resolution and confidence of geospatial land-use assessments
Course Document

In this professional engineering CEU course, you need to review the course document titled, “Impact of Soil Properties on Land Use”, which is based on the U.S. Department of Agriculture, USDA Handbook No. 18, Chapter 8 of the “Soil Survey Manual”.
