COURSE NO: L10-005
PDH CREDIT: 10
COURSE PROVIDER: Gilbert Gedeon, P.E.
Hydrographic Surveying - Part 1
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course examines the principles and practices associated with structural deformation surveying for hydraulic structures.

This course focuses on the technical guidance, planning requirements, and surveying methodologies used to monitor structural displacements, deformations, settlements, and long-term structural movements in hydraulic and navigation structures.

In addition, this course explores deformation survey planning, geodetic monitoring network design, reference and monitoring point monumentation, deformation parameters, and the causes and mechanisms of structural deformation and dam failure. This course also discusses measurement error theory, instrument calibration procedures, angle and distance observations, electro-optical distance measurement, and atmospheric correction methods used in precise deformation monitoring applications.

So, this course covers systematic approaches for performing precise structural deformation surveys, including quality assurance practices, survey accuracy requirements, measurement schemes, and engineering surveying techniques used to support structural safety, inspection programs, and infrastructure performance assessment throughout the project life cycle.

This 10 PDH online course is applicable to civil and structural engineers, surveyors, as well as other technical professionals who are interested in learning more about hydrographic surveying.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Understanding the principles and objectives of structural deformation surveying for hydraulic and civil works structures
  • Understanding planning requirements, accuracy standards, and monitoring strategies used in deformation survey projects
  • Recognizing the causes of structural deformation, dam failure mechanisms, and deformation parameters used in monitoring programs
  • Applying geodetic monitoring network design principles, including reference networks, monitoring point monumentation, and measurement scheme development
  • Learning about sources of surveying measurement errors and instrument calibration procedures used in precise deformation monitoring
  • Applying engineering surveying techniques for angle observations, distance measurements, electro-optical distance measurement, and atmospheric correction procedures
  • Understanding quality assurance requirements, data management practices, and life-cycle monitoring considerations associated with structural deformation surveys
