GPS SPS Performance Standard
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course examines the principles and practices associated with the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS) Standard Positioning Service (SPS) performance standards.

This course focuses on SPS performance in terms of broadcast signal parameters and GPS constellation design. It explains the SPS SIS interface characteristics, including RF characteristics and NAV message structure, as well as the roles of the Space and Control Segments. Furthermore, this course describes performance characteristics such as availability, health, accuracy, integrity, and continuity specifically for the L1 Coarse/Acquisition (C/A) signal and pre-operational L2C and L5 signals.

In addition, this course explores the core of space-based positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) signals, broadcast parameters, constellation architecture, and performance commitments. It defines how SPS signals work, how to assess signal-in-space performance, and how to align system design with performance goals, all rooted in real-world civilian and commercial applications.

This 8 PDH online course is applicable to civil engineers, surveyors, as well as other technical professionals who are interested in learning more about the GPS SPS performance standard.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Identifying the organizational structure and responsibilities of the United States Space Force (USSF) regarding GPS constellation management
  • Understanding SPS SIS interface characteristics, including L1, L2, and L5 carrier frequencies and the structure of LNAV and CNAV messages
  • Recognizing SPS SIS performance standards for user range error (URE) accuracy, integrity NTE tolerances, and service continuity
  • Explaining the 24-slot constellation definitions, distinguishing between the baseline and expandable configurations for satellite deployment
  • Understanding SPS position/time domain standards, including PDOP availability and horizontal/vertical service availability thresholds
  • Understanding technical assumptions regarding SPS receivers, such as mask angles, satellite selection algorithms, and RAIM capabilities
