Engineering Classification of Earth Materials

COURSE NO: G03-008
COURSE PROVIDER: Jeelan Moghraby, Ph.D.
Engineering Classification of Earth Materials
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course outlines some of the more important properties of earth materials along with their description and classification.

The engineering classification of earth materials is a systematic approach used by professional engineers to categorize and understand the properties of soils and rocks. This classification aids in making informed decisions during construction projects. It considers factors such as grain size, moisture content, and plasticity, providing a framework to predict material behavior under different conditions. Although earth materials may be soil, rock, or combinations of soil and rock, this course focuses on soil materials. By employing this classification consistently, engineers can establish correlation and stratigraphy of the site and tailor design and construction methods, ensuring the stability and safety of structures.

This 3 PDH online course is applicable to geotechnical and civil engineers, as well as professionals who are interested in learning more about the classification of earth materials at a site for engineering purposes.
Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Understanding the significance of engineering classification at a site and interpretations for their engineering uses in construction and geotechnical projects
  • Familiarizing with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) for the classification of earth materials for engineering purposes
  • Understanding the key physical and mechanical properties of earth material influencing classification
  • Knowing the site procedures for classifying soils in the field
  • Learning how to determine the suitability of a soil for engineering purposes
Course Document
In this professional engineering CEU course, you need to review the course document titled, “Engineering Classification of Earth Materials”, which is based on the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Resources Conservation Service, Part 631 of the Geology National Engineering Handbook, titled “Engineering Classification of Earth Materials”, dated June 2022.
