Name of Assignment: Secondary Town Integrated Flood Protection Project-Phase II (STIFPP-II), Fund: ADB & GOB.
Year: Jan 2008 - Dec 2010 (36 months).
Location: Rajshahi, Gaibandha, Bangladesh
Client: BWDB & LGED
Main project features: The Project for integrated flood protection covers nine secondary towns in Bangladesh: Brahmanbaria, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Kushtia, Manikganj, Munshiganj, Mymensingh, Rajshahi, and Sunamganj. The selected towns are prone to river flooding, erosion, waterlogging, and flash floods. The poorer income groups, especially recently settled dwellers, are the most vulnerable to disaster. Lack of flood protection and inadequate drainage lead to waterlogging and overflowing of sewerage facilities, especially latrines, and cause widespread environmental degradation and deplorable unsanitary living conditions. The integrated approach, combining river protection works with drainage and basic sanitation services, is appropriate for the urban areas in Bangladesh, which are prone to frequent river flooding, particularly in low-lying areas with poor drainage systems.

Client: Govt. of Libya
Main project features: The Great Man-Made River Project was designed to transform Libya's coastal belt into a well-watered agricultural region. It was intended to achieve this by using the yield of vadose aquifers transported through 2700km of mainly 4.00m diameter transmission pipelines in the end reservoirs at Sirt and Benghazi.
Position held: Civil Engineer
Activities Performed:
Concrete Mix Designs: For a 28-day strength of 315 kg/cm2 with a maximum water/cement ratio of 0.42 and a target slump of 125 rams. A high-range water-reducing admixture of the melamine formaldehyde type is used for Type F and Type G (ASTM C494) designations to meet this criterion. The greater retardation effect of the Type G material is utilized during the summer months when high ambient and concrete temperatures increase slump loss. During the cooler winter months, Type F is used as slump loss is not as pronounced. Each production line is supplied by its concrete batch plant, which is capable of producing sufficient concrete to sustain maximum production of forty-four 4 m diameter pipes per day, a total of 1100 m3 per line.
Pre-Stressed Concrete Pipe Production: Fabricate steel joint rings, cut steel and weld into the cylinder, weld joint rings to cylinder, conduct a hydrostatic test of the cylinder assembly, embed cylinder assembly in the concrete core, cure concrete core, wrap prestressing wire over the core, apply rich mortar coating over the wire, cure concrete coating, final inspection, and storage, transport to the installation site.
Concrete Quality Control: Carryout necessary tests for concrete material; coarse aggregate, fine aggregate (Los Angeles Abrasion ASTM C131, Grading envelope ASTM C33), cement (ASTM C150), admixture, water quality (ASTM C1602), tension (ASTM E8/E8M) pre-stress wire, prepared concrete mix design, compressive strength (ASTM C31), tensile strength (ASTM C1583), water absorption test (ASTM C1585), Epoxy repair.
Providing Pre-Stress: Larger diameter pipes requiring a vertical casting process in which the steel cylinder was embedded in the core began to be manufactured, cured concrete core is wrapped with prestressing wire and finished by coating with spray-applied mortar corrosion protection to the wire.
Pipe Laying: Excavation and stockpiling, pipe placing, pipe joining by bulldozer, placing and backfilling material, compacting bedding and backfilling material.
