The NGS Gravity Program: Socio-Economic Benefits and Geospatial Applications

COURSE NO: L09-002
PDH CREDIT: 9
COURSE PROVIDER: Gilbert Gedeon, P.E.
The NGS Gravity Program: Socio-Economic Benefits and Geospatial Applications
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course examines the socio-economic benefits and geospatial applications of the NGS Gravity Program.

This course focuses on the NGS Gravity Program’s goal to improve orthometric heights and the role of the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) in providing accurate positioning. It describes the transition to GPS-derived orthometric heights and the features of the new geopotential datum (NAPGD2022). Furthermore, this course examines methods of estimating socio-economic benefits, such as footprint analysis and economic multiplier effects, across applications like floodplain management, infrastructure management, and precision farming.

In addition, this course explores the core of real-world geospatial benefits: improved orthometric heights, cost savings in construction, and enhanced safety-of-life. It explains how gravity data works, how to select the right components, and how to align system design with performance goals, all rooted in real-world geodetic applications.

This 9 PDH online course is applicable to civil engineers, surveyors, as well as other technical professionals who are interested in learning more about the NGS Gravity Program.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Defining the role of the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) and the core objectives of the NGS Gravity Program
  • Evaluating the transition to GPS-derived orthometric heights and the technical features of the geopotential datum
  • Analyzing the socio-economic benefits across sectors including floodplain management, marine navigation, and agriculture
  • Applying standard methods for estimating economic value, such as footprint analysis and economic multipliers
  • Identifying opportunities for cost savings and accuracy improvements in geospatial activities like long line leveling
  • Understanding the societal value of improved height measurement for addressing impacts of storms, flooding, and sea level rise
Course Document
In this professional engineering CEU course, you need to review the course document titled, “The NGS Gravity Program: Socio-Economic Benefits and Geospatial Applications”, which is based on the U.S. Department of Commerce, Publication No. NOS NGS 8, “Scaling the Heights: Socio-Economic Study of the NGS Gravity Program”.
