Surveying Principles and Practices – Part 2

This online engineering PDH course provides a specialized technical framework for utilizing Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and executing complex route and land division surveys.
This course covers the fundamentals of GPS operations, focusing on high-accuracy techniques like Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) and post-processed measurements. It addresses challenges such as signal interference and the transition between different coordinate systems.
Additionally, this course discusses the design of horizontal circular curves and the Public Land Survey System's history and evolution, including how to work with various datums and utilize the Online Positioning User Service (OPUS) for data validation. This course includes technical instructions to ensure data integrity across four distinct GNSS survey quality levels, ranging from major watershed control to general topographic mapping.
This 5 PDH online course is applicable to civil engineers, surveyors, as well as other technical professionals who are interested in learning more about satellite surveying and specialized field applications.
This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Configuring high-accuracy carrier phase GPS equipment for Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) and static positioning based on project-specific occupation times and baseline lengths
- Mitigating satellite signal errors by managing Position Dilution of Precision (PDOP), setting appropriate elevation masks, and resolving multipath interference
- Implementing coordinate transformations and datum selections, including NAD83, NAVD88, and the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) system, to align field data with geographic reference frames
- Calculating circular curve elements, such as radius, tangent distance, and long chords, to execute precise route layouts using deflection angles
- Interpreting the legal subdivisions of the Public Land Survey System (PLSS) to define property boundaries via townships, sections, and fractional legal descriptions
- Applying quality assurance standards for GNSS survey levels I through IV and utilizing OPUS for the automated post-processing of satellite observables
