Generative AI vs. Agentic AI in Engineering

COURSE NO: W02-001

COURSE PROVIDER: Brian Lisiewski, P.E.
Generative AI vs. Agentic AI in Engineering
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course examines the principles, applications, and professional considerations associated with generative AI and agentic AI in engineering.

Artificial Intelligence is transforming engineering practice across all disciplines. Two emerging paradigms with significant impact are Generative AI and Agentic AI. Generative AI produces content (designs, code, text, images, etc.) by learning patterns from data, whereas agentic AI operates autonomously to pursue specified goals and take actions without step-by-step prompts.

This course introduces both concepts, highlights how each is used in various engineering fields, and discusses ethical considerations for their use. By the end of the course, participants will understand the differences between generative and agentic AI, recognize examples of each in their engineering domain, and be aware of their professional responsibilities when integrating AI into projects.

This 2 PDH online course is applicable to most engineer discipline(s) and professionals who are interested in learning more about how to adopt AI into their line of work.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Differentiating Generative vs. Agentic AI by explaining the core characteristics of generative AI (content creation on demand) versus agentic AI (autonomous decision-making and action).
  • Identifying Applications in Engineering by identifying practical use cases of generative and agentic AI across multiple engineering disciplines (civil, mechanical, electrical, software, etc.).
  • Understanding Benefits and Limitations by describing the advantages (e.g. design exploration, automation, efficiency) and limitations/risks (e.g. lack of true understanding, need for validation, requirement of safeguards) of each AI approach.
  • Applying Ethical and Professional Standards by articulating key ethical considerations (safety, accountability, bias, data privacy, etc.) related to AI in engineering and identifying best practices (human oversight, validation, transparency) to responsibly implement AI tools in professional practice.
