AI For Grid Operations: Event Detection, Outage Prediction & Power Quality Analytics

This online engineering PDH course examines how artificial intelligence and machine learning support event detection, outage prediction, and power quality analytics in electric grid operations.
Utilities collect large volumes of operational data from SCADA, smart meters (AMI), and phasor measurement units (PMUs), and AI models can turn these data streams into early warnings of equipment failures, outage risk, and power quality disturbances.
Because AI is a decision-support tool, its alerts and predictions must be validated, documented, and approved by a licensed engineer who remains responsible for the safety and reliability of grid operations.
This course covers operational data streams, anomaly and event detection, false alarm management, outage prediction and incipient failure detection, power quality classification and root-cause analysis, and reliability indices such as SAIDI and SAIFI. It also explains model validation metrics, and emphasizes ISO 9001-style governance with configuration control, audit trails, and FMEA.
This 1 PDH online course is applicable to electrical and mechanical engineers, as well as other technical professionals who are interested in learning more about AI for grid operations.
This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Understanding how SCADA, AMI, and PMU data support AI models in grid operations
- Familiarizing with AI methods for event and anomaly detection and false alarm management
- Understanding outage prediction and incipient failure detection using AI
- Explaining power quality disturbance classification and root-cause analysis
- Familiarizing with validation metrics and reliability indices such as SAIDI and SAIFI
- Explaining model governance, FMEA, and the engineer's oversight of AI decisions
In this professional engineering CEU course, you need to review the course document titled, “AI For Grid Operations: Event Detection, Outage Prediction & Power Quality Analytics”, prepared by Brian Lisiewski, P.E.
Once you complete your course review, you need to take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of ten (10) questions to earn 1 PDH credits. The quiz will be based on the entire document.
Upon successful completion of the quiz, print your Certificate of Completion instantly. (Note: if you are paying by check or money order, you will be able to print it after we receive your payment.) For your convenience, we will also email it to you. Please note that you can log in to your account at any time to access and print your Certificate of Completion.
