COURSE TITLE: Introduction to Climate Change
COURSE NO: C03-202W
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH live webinar provides the background of what climate change is, the latest science concerning the causes of climate change, and why a company or other entity will stand to benefit in reducing GHG emissions. It also discusses risks related to Climate Change that can affect your company.

Climate Change is regarded internationally as one of the great challenges to mankind. There is little dispute that the climate is changing at a faster rate than ever, which will have great effects on public health, on our physical infrastructure, business, life and death in many countries, and our way of life. All of the major scientific agencies and associations publicly state that the major increase in the rate of emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) caused by human-induced activities is at least a significant contributor to Climate Change. A recent global conference has resulted in an agreement to attempt to achieve a global reduction in GHG emissions. Many nations will create or change rules to limit GHG emissions. Many businesses will respond by attempting to reduce them. In many cases, actions to reduce GHG emissions also provide significant financial benefits.

This 3 PDH online live webinar is intended primarily for chemical, environmental, mechanical and industrial engineers who are interested in gaining a better understanding of the issue of Climate Change and GHG emissions.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education live webinar is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Understanding the background about Climate Change and its importance
  • Learning about different GHGs, including their sources and activities that cause emissions
  • Understanding why a Climate Change or GHG emission reduction program will benefit your entity
  • Knowing the different risk factors involving Climate Change and how to address such risk issues.

COURSE TITLE: Basics of Air Pollution Control
COURSE NO: C02-203W
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH live webinar presents various strategies to reduce emissions into the air, including the proper approach to deciding on a strategy. It discusses different APC technologies, including their advantages and disadvantages. It also describes methods to measure success.

The risk of emitting toxic pollutants into the air such that impacts may cause public health issues, and the stringent federal and state regulations are reasons why facilities are required to reduce air pollution emission rates. The two most effective ways to reduce air emissions is process optimization (“Pollution Prevention”) and installation of “end-of-pipe” air pollution control (APC) technology.

This 2 PDH online live webinar is intended primarily for chemical, environmental, mechanical and industrial engineers who are interested in gaining a better understanding of air pollution control strategies.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education live webinar is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Strategizing the best method to reduce air emission rates
  • Learning about different APC technologies, their requirements and limitations
  • Determining your success rate in implementing a strategy

COURSE TITLE: Health Effects of Air Pollution
COURSE NO: C03-206W
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH live webinar provides an overview on the types of compounds which when emitted into the air may potentially have dangerous health impacts, the types of health effects likely caused by excessive air toxic exposure, and how health risk factors for different compounds are calculated and used.

As we have seen recently in well-publicized videos and news from China, air pollution can have a major effect not just on public health, but on business growth. China has emphasized economic growth over environmental protection, resulting in many of their large cities being heavily polluted, resulting in greater hospitalizations, premature deaths, and living with protective masks. These all certainly effect economic growth after all. Unlike water and land pollution, which can be segregated from the public, pollution from automobiles, trucks, factory stacks, etc. goes into the air which everybody eventually breathes, and can be affected by. Yet we live in a time of diverse fuel and chemical usage. It is important to understand the potential impacts of the byproducts of combustion or use of chemicals have on public health to develop and comply with laws based on minimizing impacts and to be a good neighbor.

This 3 PDH online live webinar is intended primarily for chemical, environmental, mechanical and industrial engineers who are interested in gaining a better understanding of the health effects of air pollution caused by transportation sources as well as industry, and how government uses such findings to make regulations.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education live webinar is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Understanding which air emissions have the greatest effect on public health
  • Learning about what common deleterious public health effects are caused by air toxics
  • Learning about how health cause and effect as well as risk are studied
  • Learning about how risk factors are estimated and used to determine allowable emissions

COURSE TITLE: The Future of Food Waste Resource Harvesting
COURSE NO: R01-201W
Course Highlights

This PDH live webinar presents the various forms of food waste management as a separated material. The Food Recovery Hiearcy of the USEPA is examined and its priorities are explained. An early success with yellow oil recycling is reviewed. This course provides comparisons of the chemical products and energy production results from the various means of degrading food waste. Then aerobic and anaerobic degredation are compared in terms of the gaseous products produced. The physical techniques and cros-sections of the three major types of aerobic and anaerobic degredation are explained. Then the advantages and disadvantages of each are compared. The most important advantages are extracted and summarized.

Next, the amount of energy that can be released in dry anaerobic degradation is discussed to point out that the amount of energy available to produce usable energy is greater than the amount of energy required to conduct the dry anaerobic degradation. Next the details of methane producing degradation are discussed. This includes the types of chemicals which predominate at each step and the four steps that result in methane gas: Hydrolysis, Acidogenesis, Acetogenesis and Methanogenesis. Next the parameters for supporting anaerobic biodegradation are reviewed, including: Temperature, Moisture, pH and Nutrients and Elements.

The details of how each parameter can support methane production are provided. The very important Carbon-Nitrogen ratio is detailed under the nutrients topic. The locations in the world where anaerobic degradation of food waste are occuring are reviewed. The biogas locations in several countries in Europe are given. A map showing the distribution of biogas facilities across the United States is presented. Then the anaerobic degradation projects in California are reviewed by type: dry digestion, high solids digestion, and wet digestion.

Finally, the conclusion is reviewed as to dry anaerobic digestion being the star degradation method. The advantages of this method are reviewed and summarized.

This 1 PDH live webinar is applicable to chemical, environmental, and civil engineers, as well as any specialty of engineering involved with food waste processing.
