This online engineering PDH course presents the evolution of the U.S. auto industry by tracing historical events relating to the origin of the automotive history to Detroit, Michigan. Michigan is a glove-shaped piece of land, off the beaten track, wedged up between two lakes, and with sometimes very inclement weather. Ohio and Indiana; who are also instrumental in the founding of the auto industry; are located adjacent to Michigan and have the same weather patterns. Despite these seeming disadvantages, the author traces what he thinks are the circumstances that lead to Detroit becoming the automotive capital of the world.

 

He starts in England where an event occurred 200 years ago that transformed the world of engineering making the automobile and automobile designs possible and functional. He traces the origin of the key materials that make up an automotive vehicle and how they aided Detroit in the automotive industry. He describes the brilliant and famous people who lived in the Midwestern part of the country who aided Detroit in its famous rise to prominence. He sums up Detroit's success to famous people, an abundance of key materials, and great lakes.

This online engineering PDH course takes out some of the complication by breaking it down into its various elements and dealing with them separately. It describes gear trains, planetary gear sets, differential gears, and gearboxes and their use in the industrial and automotive fields. Next, couplings and clutches are discussed with reference to their use in automotive torque converters. This course deals with some of the more important applications of anti-friction bearings in automotive vehicles. It explains in simple terms how the various ratios of a planetary gearset are used in automotive automatic transmissions and how to calculate the forces on their bearings. It describes the "differential unit" in automotive drive axle systems and how to calculate the bearing loads on the all-important spiral bevel gearset.
