Guide to Upgrade the Seismic Capacity of Existing Reinforced Concrete Buildings
This online engineering PDH course provides information on seismic upgrading techniques that target reinforced concrete (RC) buildings which constitute the largest portion of the existing building stock.
Seismic retrofitting is the modification of existing structures to make them more resistant to seismic activity, ground motion, or soil failure due to earthquakes. Every structure must have two load resisting systems, a vertical load resisting system for transferring the vertical load to the ground and a horizontal load resisting system for transferring the horizontal load to the vertical load system. The seismic forces must be properly collected by the horizontal framing system and properly transferred into vertical lateral resisting systems. Any discontinuity or irregularity in this load path or load transfer may cause one of the major contributions to structural damage during strong earthquakes. This course will present the two major categories of seismic upgrading techniques: local retrofitting technique that operates at the element level, and global retrofitting technique that operates on the structure as a whole.
This 2 PDH online course is applicable to structural engineers who are interested in gaining knowledge on the techniques used to upgrade the seismic capacity of existing reinforced concrete buildings.
This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills. At the end of this course, the student will be able to deeply define and understand the following:
- Familiarizing with the local retrofitting methods of RC elements in existing RC buildings
- Familiarizing with the global retrofitting methods of existing RC structures
- Learning about the local and global techniques in terms of their strengths and weaknesses
- Understanding the influence of the retrofitting methods upon seismic capacity of RC buildings
- Learning how to professionally select the appropriate method to increases the seismic capacity of the existing RC buildings
